Do you drink?

For sure! I like to have a beer now and then. I prefer lagers and pilsners. Sometimes I'll have wine. I prefer white wines over the red ones.

If I'm up for some heavier drinking, I'll usually drink Japanese rice wine (sake). What's nice about it is that it has far less impurities than other alocholic beverages, which means you don't get a hangover. Smiling

I tend to avoid the harder stuff, because it's easy to get very drunk very quickly. When I drink, I do so because it helps me relax, both physically and mentally. I don't do it to get so drunk that I cannot stand. I don't see any point in that.

The Muth Family Name (from John Mood)

John Mood contributed this about the Muth family name:

My sirname, was derived from Muth, or more properly Müth. My earliest ancestors arrived in the New World in the 1700's, and were Methodist ministers and silversmiths of note. The first one was Yohann Müth, who I was named after. He dropped the "üth" and added "ood" fearing that the English speakers could not pronounce it so easily as Mood. John was also easier for the English speakers. Both stuck. Later on his brother Peter and he practised the silver smith trade together since ministers didn't get paid much in those days. It also made it handy to be able to make the chalices and other appointments for the altar. They settled in Charleston, SC where I was born and raised. There is still a silversmith shop at the address of their shop on King Street. I believe it was 195 King St.

I saw your website and definition of the name Muth, which I found very interesting and well founded. I thought I would advance a bit more information to you for your background files.

There are several postings on the internet regarding the meaning of the surname "MUTH". Many refer to its first introduction into Germany in the 1300s and into the USA in 1855. My family - the MUTHs who emigrated to New Bremen, Ohio (just North of Dayton) in the 1860s, alwsys referred to it as being a name straight out of the bible... specifically in the Book of Psalms.

The Muth Family Name (from Douglas Muth)

(Note: I originally gleaned all of this information from another source a long time ago. I don't take credit for finding any of this information...)

The sure "Muth" is of German origin. It has been traced all the way to the first name of the father of the original bearer of the name as a surname. In this case, the name comes from the medeival nick-names of "Mut" and "Muth", which were abbreviations of the Old Germanic name "Muoto". The nick-name "Muth", in particular, was used for affection and endearment. Therefore, the surname came to mean "a son of Muoto". This served as a way of identification in the period before an actual hereditary surname system was established.
