Viruses: Staying Safe Online
Submitted by dmuth on Mon, 2006-01-16 09:33. Anti-VirusThis document is intended to be a primer for new computer users on how to stay safe online. It is NOT intended to take the place of a proper computer training course and/or other instructional materials. If you are new to computers, please take some time and seek out professional assistance -- the rest of the Internet will thank you for it.
That being said, here's some general tips for staying safe online:
- Download and install the Firefox web browser and use it exclusively instead of Internet Explorer. IE is chock full of security holes, and new ones are being found all the time. Using IE is a big liability these days.
Other Antivirus Sites
Submitted by dmuth on Mon, 2006-01-09 22:13. Anti-VirusOf course, there's no need to take my word for it when it comes to viruses, here is a list of some other anti-virus resources on the Internet that you can use to make an informed decision about viruses and anti-virus software.
If there's a site that you would like to see listed on here, please contact me and send me the URL for inclusion in the list.
- Virus Bulletin
- VB is a magazine which contains reviews of the most popular anti-virus products. Their website also contains much in the way of technical information about viruses.
Quality Antivirus Products
Submitted by dmuth on Mon, 2006-01-09 22:09. Anti-VirusI try to recommend those products that have both Windows 95 and DOS versions. That way, end users can have the comfort of a Windows 95 interface to scan their files with, and power users have a small DOS-based product which can fit on a bootable floppy disk.
For the most part, I only list products that are certified by the ICSA.
- AntiVir
- This product is made by a company in Germany. It claims to be small and fast. It also has support for Windows, DOS, Sparc, and other platforms.
Doug Muth's Anti-Virus Help Page
Submitted by dmuth on Mon, 2006-01-09 21:43. Anti-VirusWelcome to my anti-virus help page! I've been running this page since about 1995 or so. In that time, viruses have gone from being annoying little programs which spread on floppy disks, to very troublesome beasts which can spread world-wide across the Internet in a matter of minutes.
I think that the best way to cure virus/worm problems is to prevent them from happening, and the best way to prevent them from hapenning is through education and awareness. Being a geek, understanding viruses seems to come naturally to me, so I figured I would share information about them with others.
