John Mood contributed this about the Muth family name:

My sirname, was derived from Muth, or more properly Müth. My earliest ancestors arrived in the New World in the 1700's, and were Methodist ministers and silversmiths of note. The first one was Yohann Müth, who I was named after. He dropped the "üth" and added "ood" fearing that the English speakers could not pronounce it so easily as Mood. John was also easier for the English speakers. Both stuck. Later on his brother Peter and he practised the silver smith trade together since ministers didn't get paid much in those days. It also made it handy to be able to make the chalices and other appointments for the altar. They settled in Charleston, SC where I was born and raised. There is still a silversmith shop at the address of their shop on King Street. I believe it was 195 King St.

The best I can tell they arrived in Pennsylvania and moved south to Charleston after finding the winters too harsh. At any rate, Peter later died in the custody of the British during the American Revolution. John's sons (John and Peter) also learned the trade of silver smithing. After them, most of the family was either involved in medicine or preaching the Gospel.
