The Muth Family Name (from Garry Muth)
Garry Muth wrote in about the Muth Family Name, and he had this to share:
I saw your website and definition of the name Muth, which I found very interesting and well founded. I thought I would advance a bit more information to you for your background files. There are several postings on the internet regarding the meaning of the surname "MUTH". Many refer to its first introduction into Germany in the 1300s and into the USA in 1855. My family - the MUTHs who emigrated to New Bremen, Ohio (just North of Dayton) in the 1860s, alwsys referred to it as being a name straight out of the bible... specifically in the Book of Psalms.
In 1992, I went to several biblical scholars in an effort to determine its background in the Bible.
In Psalm 9, the introduction written by David was: "To the chief musician upon Muth-laben." In reading the Psalm, one easily sees that it was written by David immediately after his victory over Goliath. "laben" is translated in almost all biblical resources as "the death of". Other biblical resources translate "Muth" as one of two things - "the son of Ben" (one of the 12 tribes of Israel) and "the champion" - meaning the one who fought on behalf of the tribe of Benjamin - as David was the "Muth" - the one who fought on behalf of the tribe of Judah.
Accordingly, the biblical meaning of the name MUTH is the "Champion" - the champion of the tribe - the biggest, baddest, bravest, bad-ass elected to fight battles on behalf of the tribe.
